(West Palm Beach, FL) Coastal Optical Systems received ISO 9001:2000 certification March 3, 2007.
"Achieving certification with the first audit is something we’re really proud of," said Jay Kumler, president of Coastal. "Achieving this during a period of rapid growth, while adding new departments like coating, and while bringing on new people across the organization really says something for the dedication of the Coastal team.”
Transition from MIL spec to ISO Quality program
Since its founding in 1991, Coastal operated under a MIL-I-45208A and MIL-STD-45662 compliant QA program which passed audits of Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Ball Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, and L3 Communications among others. In 2006, Coastal initiated a plan of action to reach ISO certification.
Initiation to certification in 1 year
Quality Manager, Al Begin, worked closely with Richard Rowe of ISOtec USA Inc. in establishing and executing the plan. Certification was obtained just over a year from initiating the process.
Foundation for growth
We feel we have a strong framework from which to grow while assuring we continue to meet customer quality needs. The ISO certification will make it easier for us to comply with the institutional flow down requirements that come with larger projects” said Al Begin.
Coastal’s quality department expanded to 4 full time employees in 2006.
Coastal Optical Systems, Inc., founded in 1991, designs and manufactures precision lens assemblies for Biomedical, Inspection & Metrology, Defense, Entertainment, Space and Astronomy markets.
Coastal Optical Systems is a wholly owned subsidiary of JENOPTIK Laser, Optik, Systeme GmbH (Jena, Germany).
