The high performance 28 element projection lens is suspended from the ceiling and backfills an 8 foot diameter hemisphere. The proprietary optical design provides accurate mapping of the satellite data on the globe with very little drop off in the relative illumination. The system provides the required high brightness and contrast required to showcase the scientific content in the large hall. As reported in the New York Daily News:
"The centerpiece of the exhibit is the Dynamic Earth Globe, 8 feet in diameter, housing a projection system that beams a digital film - 9,600 frames of satellite data recorded on a day in September 1996. It is a view of the Earth that you would see if you were on the space shuttle, with the Earth slowly sailing be beneath you." - [Dr. Edmund] Mathez said. [chairman and curator of the new exhibit.]"
Coastal Optical Systems produced the custom dome projection optics for Barco Projection Systems. Electrosonics produced the The Dynamic Earth Globe for AMNH. A virtual tour of the Hall of Planet Earth produced using IPIX immersive photographs is available at www.amnh.org/rose/hope.
The Hall of Planet Earth opened in June 1999. Read some of the reviews of the new exhibit:
