Near Earth Asteroid Tracking Telescope (NEAT)
Maui Space Surveillance Site's (MSSS) NEAT telescope came online in February 2000. JENOPTIK Optical Systems, Inc. delivered the focal plane reduction optics earlier that year to JPL and Boeing.
The focal plane reduction optics were mounted on the Maui Space Surveillance Site (MSSS) 1.2-m telescope to facilitate use of the new NEAT Asteroid Discovery Camera.
NEAT is a cooperative effort between the NASA - Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the United States Air Force and is designed to complete a comprehensive search of the sky for near-Earth asteroids and comets.
Technical Challenges
JENOPTIK fabricated, assembled and tested the focal plane reducer. Challenges include:
- support of 12-inch Ø CaF2 and glass lens elements over the observing temperature at 10,032 ft.
- the color corrected design of the large aperture refractive assembly over the wide spectral band
